Rain in the Benefits

With the first rain in months pouring down over us here in Los Angeles, it seems the perfect time for rain barrels! Here's info from smart2begreen.com

It is time for all of us to become proactive in residential water conservation. A great way to do this is to install a rain barrel or rain tank at your home. Rain barrels and rain tanks are an extremely effective way in which you can easily harvest and store your own pure rainwater to use later for lawn and garden watering. They offer many economic and ecologic benefits.

  • Conserve water and help lower residential utility costs.
  • Reduce storm water runoff by greatly decreasing the amount of rainwater pouring off rooftops or through gutter downspouts. Storm water runoff can contain many pollutants such as oil, grease, and bacteria.
  • Available in a wide array of shapes, sizes, styles, and colors to suit any residence. They are commonly constructed from rustproof and chemical-resistant plastic, concrete, galvanized steel, or fiberglass.
  • Inexpensive and easy to build, customize, and install.

  1. Rainbarrels are definitely a wonderful way to do your part. We have three around our house that we made from re-using food grade barrels. We found a very helpful website for making your own at www.aquabarrel.com.

  2. Our family has been "rainwater harvesting" for over 20 years. We didn't call it that way back when, it was just "the right thing to do" and also because it was a necessity of life to have water available other than from our well.
Today, our rain gutters channel pure rainwater into our many rain barrels.
We keep our gutters very clean all year long with the new gutter cleaning tool called the Gutter Clutter Buster which we bought on-line.
Now we save time, money, energy, more rainwater more often because the gutters are not obstructed with debris. Hope everyone remembers the importance of clean gutters for cleaner rainwater. Happy Harvesting To All.

  3. It's so wonderful to hear your experiences with rain barrels! Appreciate your comments and tips!

Isn't it interesting that so many 'old school' ideas are getting attention now that they're seen as Green? I can feel my grandparents all smiling knowingly.
